Surgery is risky business. Surgeons, registered nurses, and other medical professionals rely on technicians to help them save lives and heal the ailing. A surgical technician career is an admirable and gratifying professional path that requires less schooling than that of other health practitioners.

There are a variety of schools and programs, which offer formal training for surgery, or operating room technicians. Nearly all medical professions require a combination of classroom and clinical training to attain a degree. The surgical technician career track is no different. However, many degree programs now offer online programs for the classroom portions of the required coursework.

These academic programs may be offered by colleges and universities, vocational training programs, hospitals, and the military. The length of the program varies from nine to 24 months. Programs leading to an Associate’s degree usually last two years and may best prepare students to become nationally certified, if they so choose. If a student decides to complete his or her coursework online, the clinical component will still need to be completed in a medical facility, most typically a hospital.

The job of a surgical technician is fast paced and challenging, much like the operating room itself. Students will often study the sciences, such as anatomy, chemistry, and biology, in order to be able to effectively respond and function during surgical procedures. Technicians are expected to prepare patients for the operating room and ensure that equipment is functioning and that the proper tools are available and ready to be used. Some technicians may even assist in the surgical operation by stitching up wounds or other jobs as assigned.

As the world population ages, the number of companies and hospitals needing qualified candidates in this industry is expected to grow. Academic institutions have answered this call by making it easier than ever before to pursue a surgical technician career. These programs target working adults by offering courses after five o’clock, as well as curricula that may be followed entirely online.
