Surgical Technician Education – A Necessary Profession in the Medical Field

As medical technologies continue to advance at a rapid rate and the operating room becomes a network of laser and computer assisted methodologies, the opportunities for skilled surgical technicians continue to grow. Add aging populations with increased life expectancies and a desire to control the cost of health care and the need for those who have a surgical technician education continues to grow.

What exactly does a surgical technician do, and what are the requirements for a surgical technician education?  Sometimes also referred to as surgical technologists, these highly trained professionals are the right arm to surgeons and anesthesiologists during all facets of a surgical procedure.  These technicians get the operating room ready for procedures and ensure that all of the necessary tools are available as well as the sterile surroundings that are a necessity in any operating theatre.

Depending upon the procedures at a given hospital or outpatient surgical practice, someone with surgical technician education is a critical member of the operating team.  Often it is this professional who prepares the patient for surgery, whether it be cleansing, shaving or transporting the patient to the surgical wing. Additionally, the surgical tech makes certain that the operating area is sterile prior to the patient’s arrival.

Surgical technicians in all states must have graduated from high school and have completed a surgical technician training program. While it varies from location to location, the minimum training program is one year and many community colleges and hospitals offer a more intensive two year program that leads to an Associate’s degree.  Those who are interested in this field should consider researching the various educational options that are available in this field.

Education in this field is a combination of traditional classroom lectures and training along with real-life clinical training. Areas of study include hard sciences like biology, anatomy and physiology. The softer science areas include typical nursing training such as patient safety and care, anesthesia procedures and follow up care and specialty areas like infection prevention, drug administration and the technology of various surgical applications.
